Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.
I read a powerful quote last week from pastor and author Brian Sanders. He said:
“To live in worship and submission is to accept an entirely new way to see and live in the world. It is to accept not just God’s grace but also his way.”
This concept is a significant part of what John is trying to communicate in the verses above. God’s forgiveness and grace are real. When we sin, we are forgiven. Jesus came to destroy the work of sin in our life and grant us freedom. But believing we are forgiven is only step one of our journey. We must also embrace the way of Jesus. As John says, when we are born of God, we cannot go on sinning. It’s not the way of God.
Undoubtedly you will have opportunities to sin today. Gossip, slander, lust, greed, fear, and anger will all present themselves as potential paths. Try to see each of those as a crossroads where you can choose the way of Christ instead. Choose honor, generosity, courage, and love.
