In peace I will both lie down and sleep;
for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
So what exactly is it about God that enables us to “both lie down and sleep in peace”?
During a recent dinner conversation a friend turned to me and said, “Well, do you believe God is in control, or not?” In context it was a hypothetical question, but I loved the directness. It’s a question most of us wrestle with our entire lives: Is God really in control of EVERYTHING, even in our most difficult times?
This is one of the great “either/or” questions of our Christian journey. In our world of innumerable opinions, nuances, and gray areas this is one issue that always seems to come back to black or white. Either it’s true that God is in control… or He is not. There is no middle ground.
(And heaven help us if He is not!)
David understood this. He constantly proclaimed his confidence in God’s oversight of his life. He made his decisions based on it (well, most of them, anyway). He sang about it in many of his psalms.
And he slept in peace at night because of it.
How about you today? Do you honestly believe God is in control of every circumstance in your life? Do you trust His unending love to carry you through your difficult times? If your heart is burdened today then turn to Him, the one and only Person in the universe who makes you “dwell in safety.”
As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain your mercy from me;
your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me!
– Psalm 40:11, of David
