Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
Does God really care what you want?
We’re looking this week at the feeding of the 5,000 and the wonderful truths about God we find in this passage. One of those truths is found in the phrase “as much as they wanted.”
I love thinking about how this scene might have played out. It seems clear there were no rules on how much people could take. Did some people take one loaf, others multiple, and maybe a few planner-types grabbed extras for later? We don’t know. But we do know “Help yourself!” appears to have been the rule of the day. Jesus cared and made sure each person got what he or she wanted.
Yes, God cares what you want. That is another beautiful part of His character.
This is often easier for parents to grasp because parents want to know what their child is thinking. Parents care if their child wants to go right or left, vanilla or chocolate, the blue toy or the green one. Of course they can’t give the child everything, but parents love their child and it brings them pleasure to give their child good things.
And so it is with your Heavenly Father and you.
Do you tell God what you honestly want in your life, no matter if you deserve it or not? Do you nurture thoughts about God that are contrary to His deeply generous and gracious nature? And do you believe He cares, really cares, about what you think? Let’s go to Him today like a young child runs expectantly to mom or dad!
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:11)
