“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Let’s be brutally honest today. Are you any good at resting? I mean, really and truly resting?
I have several young grandchildren and those little twerps never stop. They just run around and chatter and bang into things and throw stuff and yell and laugh and poop and cry. And eventually they melt down, collapse in some way and get their necessary nap. Some of my favorite family pictures are of a toddler fast asleep with his/her face lying in a bowl of mac ‘n cheese. They don’t want to rest, but rest is often thrust upon them!
How about you? You’re an adult, or at least closer to it than a toddler. Are you able to pause and rest when you need it? Are you able to make the choice to just sit, think, talk to God and rejuvenate?
Or do you wake up with your face in a bowl of mac ‘n cheese?
I’m fascinated by how many times in scripture God encourages us to simply “come” to Him. “Come now, let us reason together” (Isaiah 1:18), “Let the one who is thirsty come” (Rev 22:17), etc. Throughout the Old Testament and the New, God’s desire for us is to come to Him – to know Him personally, to be with Him, and to receive from Him. And as Jesus reminds us in our passage, one huge thing God promises to give us when we come is simply rest. True, healthy, deep, comforting, rejuvenating rest! I mean, who wouldn’t choose to come for such a promise?
Well, for starters… me.
I’m amazed that after 35+ years of walking with God how often I spurn the simple choice to turn my attention to God many days, even for a short moment, and instead I just “get started.” I promise to pray later and forget. Learning to pause is a lifelong project for me. But I can say this with absolute confidence: I’ve never regretted a single second spent quietly with God. Never. He gives me the rest I need when I come to Him, every single time. Rest of spirit, rest of body, rest of soul. He is utterly faithful.
So again, be honest with yourself. Are you any good at resting? What keeps you from going to God and getting the rejuvenation you need and that He promises? Go to Him today! He loves you deeply, and He wants to give you the rest you need.
